OFX files, and the one LedgerBox already writes

This one has a real answer rather than a workaround. LedgerBox does not offer a file with an .ofx extension, but the QuickBooks Web Connect export it does offer is an OFX document, so if your tool reads OFX, there is already something here for it to read.

No OFX file

Download the QuickBooks QBO export, which is an OFX document, and try it in whatever reads OFX at your end. A file offered as .ofx in its own right is planned and is not here yet.

Getting data into OFX today

  1. Convert the statement in LedgerBox

    Upload the PDF and review anything flagged. Balances are reconciled before a document can be exported as clean.

  2. Download the QuickBooks QBO file

    It is OFX inside: the account and statement period declared once, then one entry per transaction with a date, an amount, a type, and a stable id.

  3. Open it in your tool

    Anything that reads OFX statements has a reasonable chance with it. If your tool insists on the .ofx extension, that is the gap this page is honest about.

Worth knowing before you import

What we do not ship is as worth stating as what we do, because finding out later is the expensive way to learn it.

What OFX carries

OFX is an open format for exchanging statements: an account, a statement period, and one entry per transaction with a posted date, an amount, a type, and a unique id. That last part is what lets a tool re-import a file without duplicating rows.

Ours is offered as a QuickBooks file

The export is named for QuickBooks Web Connect because that is what it was built and tested for. Calling it an OFX export would be claiming compatibility with a much wider set of tools than we have checked.

Why it is not here yet

A file format ships once we can verify it end to end: generate it, import it into your OFX tool, and see the transactions land correctly. Until that is done, the honest option is the one above, and this page says so rather than listing a format we have not proved.

Does LedgerBox export OFX?

Not under that name. The QuickBooks QBO export is an OFX document, and it is the file to try if your tool reads OFX. A general-purpose .ofx export is planned, and it will ship once it has been tested against tools beyond QuickBooks.

What is the difference between OFX and QFX?

QFX is Quicken's own variant of OFX. Files are similar in structure, and Quicken is particular about what it accepts, which is why the QFX question has its own page rather than being answered here by implication.

Will the QBO file work outside QuickBooks?

It might, because it is an OFX document, and we have not tested it beyond QuickBooks so we will not promise it. If it does not work for you, the published CSV and Excel layouts are the reliable route.
