How to convert a check
-
Upload the check
A flatbed scan or a phone photo of the front of the check both work, printed or handwritten. A single drop takes up to 20 files, one check per file.
-
We read both amounts
The courtesy box and the written legal line are extracted separately, parsed, and compared. A check whose two amounts disagree is flagged for review, never guessed. Payee, date, memo, bank, and routing details come along in the same pass.
-
Download the CSV
One row per check with all nine fields in consistent columns, the written amount printed next to the numeric one. Ready for Excel or Google Sheets.

The payee line names the counterparty
The "Pay to the order of" line becomes the payee field, and the date is normalized to a real date even when it is handwritten. That is what puts the check against the right name in your export.
Two amounts, read independently
Every check states its amount twice: as a number in the courtesy box and in words on the legal line. LedgerBox reads each one on its own, parses the words into a number, and compares the two. Any disagreement, even a cent, flags the check for review.
The MICR line, minus the account number
The digits along the bottom carry the routing number, the account number, and the check number. The full routing number is extracted; the account number is reduced to its last four digits, and no field in the extraction can hold more of it than that.
Handwritten checks too
Personal checks with a handwritten payee, date, and amounts convert the same way as printed business checks. Anything LedgerBox cannot read with confidence comes back flagged rather than filled in, and the written amount still has to agree with the numeric one before the check is marked clean.
Check conversion FAQ
How do I convert a check image to Excel or CSV?
Create a free LedgerBox account, upload the scan or photo, and download the CSV. The free trial includes enough pages to try a stack of checks, and no credit card is required.
What does the amount verification actually check?
A check states its amount twice: numerically in the courtesy box and in words on the legal line. LedgerBox reads both independently, parses the written amount into a number, and compares the two. If they disagree by even a cent, the check is flagged for review instead of exported as clean.
Does it work with phone photos and handwriting?
Yes. OCR-backed extraction reads flatbed scans and phone photos, printed and handwritten, the same way. Fields it cannot read with confidence are flagged rather than guessed.
Which fields are extracted from a check?
Nine fields: check number, date, payee, the numeric amount, the written amount, memo, bank name, the last four digits of the account number, and the routing number. Each check becomes one row in the export.
Is the full account number stored?
No. Only the last four digits of the account number ever enter the extraction; the schema has no field that can hold more, so a full account number cannot appear in results or exports. The routing number, which identifies the bank rather than the account, is kept in full.
Is my check data secure?
Documents are encrypted in transit and at rest, processed in isolated storage, and never used to train models. You can delete uploaded documents at any time and they are permanently removed.
