Convert CSV to IIF

QuickBooks Desktop imports an IIF file as journal entries. Choose your CSV, check the columns, and download the IIF.

Free, with no account. LedgerBox pays for it because the people who need it often have a PDF statement too, and reading those is what LedgerBox sells.

CSV to IIF

Step 1 of 3

The file is read and rewritten in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored.

How the conversion works

  1. Choose your CSV

The converter reads the delimiter, the header row, and the date order from the file itself.

  2. Check the columns

Correct any column the converter named wrongly before you convert.

  3. Download the IIF

Back up your company file, then import through File, Utilities, Import, IIF Files.

What a IIF file is

IIF is QuickBooks Desktop's own tab-delimited format. Each transaction is written as three rows: a TRNS row for the bank side, an SPL row for the opposing split, and an ENDTRNS terminator. The two sides have to sum to zero or QuickBooks refuses the file.

The split is posted to Uncategorized Expense or Uncategorized Income, which are the accounts QuickBooks creates for imported lines with no category. Naming a category the CSV cannot know would put the rows somewhere wrong and quiet.

Import an IIF through File, then Utilities, then Import, then IIF Files. Back up the company file first: QuickBooks does not undo an IIF import.

What the conversion keeps

A IIF file has a place for some of what a CSV file holds and not for the rest. Both lists come from the two formats, so neither can claim something the file cannot say.

Carried across

  • The transaction date
  • The amount, with its sign
  • The description or payee
  • The check number

Dropped, because IIF has no place for it

  • The running balance after each row

CSV to IIF questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and rewritten in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored. You can turn off your network connection and the converter still works.

Which accounts do the transactions post to?

The bank side posts to an account named Checking, or Credit Card for a card statement. The other side posts to Uncategorized Expense or Uncategorized Income. Rename them in QuickBooks after the import.

Can I convert a PDF bank statement here?

No. This tool reads data files, not documents. LedgerBox reads PDF and photographed statements and writes the same output formats.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no account, no email field, and no limit on how many files you convert.

The converter reads data files. LedgerBox reads the statement itself.

Upload a PDF or a photo of a statement and download the rows. No card required.
