Convert CSV to QBO

QuickBooks Desktop imports a QBO file and does not import a CSV. Choose your CSV, check the columns, and download the QBO.

Free, with no account. LedgerBox pays for it because the people who need it often have a PDF statement too, and reading those is what LedgerBox sells.

CSV to QBO

Step 1 of 3

The file is read and rewritten in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored.

How the conversion works

  1. Choose your CSV

Any bank export. The converter reads the delimiter, the header row, and the date order from the file itself.

  2. Check the columns

The converter names the date, description, amount, and balance columns it found. Change any that are wrong before you convert.

  3. Download the QBO

Import it into QuickBooks Desktop through Web Connect. The file is built in your browser and downloads straight from it.

What a QBO file is

A QBO file is QuickBooks Web Connect's import format. Inside, it is an OFX 1.02 document: a signon block, an account block, and one transaction block per line. QuickBooks Desktop reads it through File, then Utilities, then Import, then Web Connect Files.

A bank CSV holds the same transactions in columns. What it does not hold is the account block QuickBooks needs, so the converter builds one from the rows and states the account as a placeholder. QuickBooks asks which account to import into on the way in.

The converter does not write the Intuit institution tag. That tag belongs to a licensed bank, LedgerBox is not one, and QuickBooks Web Connect reads the file without it.

What the conversion keeps

A QBO file has a place for some of what a CSV file holds and not for the rest. Both lists come from the two formats, so neither can claim something the file cannot say.

Carried across

  • The transaction date
  • The amount, with its sign
  • The description or payee
  • The check number

Dropped, because QBO has no place for it

  • The running balance after each row

CSV to QBO questions

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read and rewritten in your browser. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is stored. You can turn off your network connection and the converter still works.

Does QuickBooks Online read a QBO file?

QuickBooks Online takes a CSV upload for bank transactions and does not need a QBO. QBO is the QuickBooks Desktop Web Connect format.

Can I convert a PDF bank statement here?

No. This tool reads data files, not documents. LedgerBox reads PDF and photographed statements and writes the same output formats.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no account, no email field, and no limit on how many files you convert.

The converter reads data files. LedgerBox reads the statement itself.

Upload a PDF or a photo of a statement and download the rows. No card required.
